How long does spousal support last?
It can be time-limited or open-ended. The judge considers age, real prospects of returning to employment, and the length of the marriage, among other factors. Whether it is capped in time or not depends largely on how it is presented from the outset.
Can it be ended if circumstances have changed?
Yes. If the person receiving it has significantly improved their financial position, remarried or is living with a new partner, there is a legal route to apply for it to be terminated. If you have been paying for some time and any of these apply, it is worth reviewing.
Is it too late to claim if it was not requested at the time of divorce?
It depends on the case and how much time has passed. In some situations it is still possible to act. The only way to know for certain is to analyse the specific circumstances.
